XML Site Maps

January 20, 2010
Hi Jill,

Is an XML sitemap mandatory if you have a CMS?

Hi Carolyn,

An XML sitemap is never mandatory. As long as you have created a logical structure for your website, you'll gain no additional advantage in having an XML sitemap, in my opinion.

The only caveat is if you have millions of products that are getting updated on a daily basis on your website.

Hope this helps!

I will agree that there is little benefit to adding a _BASIC_ XML sitemap to a site.
The true benefits to Google-format sitemaps is the optional tags, which allow you to alert all the spiders about which of your pages have actual updated content since the last crawl

@Timothy, are you sure that Google even pays attention to those tags?
