HRA 345: Wrap-up

November 14, 2012
That’s all for today!

For the past few weeks I’ve been hearing about "Google Now," which is out for some Android phones, and I want it on mine! Unfortunately, you have to have the latest "Jellybean" Android operating system (OS) in order to get it. I have a Google Nexus S phone with ATT service, which for whatever reason was still on the old "Gingerbread" OS. I managed to manually update it to the "Ice Cream Sandwich" (ICS) OS, but it's not quite so simple to move up to Jellybean.

So far it's been cool having ICS, because it is a lot different and better than Gingerbread, but I really want that Google Now thing! I've found a bunch of tutorials on how to upgrade to Jellybean and I even managed to "root" my phone, which seems to be the first step, but as of this writing, that's as far as I've gotten. It's been about 2/3 fun trying to figure it all out and another 1/3 frustrating as hell. Most of the instructions online seem to presume that you know everything they're talking about, and I have been going 'round and 'round with some of them.

What's cool is that whenever I encounter a stumbling block, a quick Google search usually uncovers a fix. It just gets so complicated, however, because as soon as I fix one thing and move to the next step, I end up encountering yet another block. Yesterday, throughout some of the process of rooting the phone, I had to wipe it clean of data. While I had backups, I still lost some settings. And of course now I'm hesitating to put everything back in good order again because I'm pretty sure I'll have to wipe it clean again the next time I try the upgrade. At any rate, that's mostly what I've been up to lately!

In other news, we'll be heading to Texas for Thanksgiving to visit with my daughter Corie and her fiancé, Robbie. We'll be doing some potential wedding venue tours in Austin, which should be fun! I'm not sure yet, but because of the Texas trip, I may be skipping a week of this newsletter – in which case, I'll catch you in 3 weeks! – Jill

I imagine nobody but me cares, but just in case, I have an update to this:

I now have Jellybean on my Nexus S! Yippee! And the thing that caused my quest, i.e., Google Now is also on the phone.

So yes, if you're wondering, it can be done.
