Many Domain Names for SEO

January 20, 2010
Dear Jill,

I own many domain names related to my business. Would I have a problem with Google if I made one-page websites with good related copy on these domain names and linked the one-page websites back to my main website?

Thank you for your time.

Hi Rick,

You wouldn't be in trouble, because you can put whatever sites you want online, but I doubt that it would help to bring any targeted traffic to your website, unless you thought people were typing the domain names directly into their browsers.

As I've said in the newsletter and forum nearly every day for the past 10 years, you're much better off having one great, all-encompassing website than lots of little doorway domains. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book that Google is well aware of.

Interesting comment.Cleverly done multiple sites have a huge advantage over single sites.

Keyword rich domains give you an edge that can mean dominating page 1 for the SERP's which can't be done with a single site.

Until Google eventually bans them all. :D

Why on earth would Google BAN all sites if they are doing nothing wrong (i.e. interconnecting/linking all of them together). Please do explain in detail.

They wouldn't. I was talking about one-page doorway domains whose purpose is only to drive people to the main site, as per the original question.

They wouldn't ban multiple sites that serve different purposes and sell different products/services.

Would it be a better option to re-direct all additional domains that he owns back to the main site

That would be my recommendation.

So is google after all 1 page sites.?

Of course there are 1 page sites and 1 page sites.

How on earth would google know they were associated.?

I suspect your over estimating googles abilities and priorities.

I don't really understand your question, Alvin.

The original question, I believe, was making one page sites that then just link over to your main site. How would google NOT know they were associated?

It's like the oldest trick in the book...way out of the 1993 SEO handbook ;)

Google seems to know everything! They are taking over the world it seems. Interesting discussion about the multiple sites and has given me food for thought.
