Links in New WindowJanuary 3, 2007 I have a question for your newsletter.
I am continually frustrated with web sites that provide a link, but when I click on it, it takes me OFF their site and onto another. As a marketer, I am confused why companies would push me off their site and I can’t figure out why. My question is…”Does a link that takes me off a site get the same weight in the search engines as one that opens a new window?”
Thanks!
Jay

Hi Jay,
The search engines don’t know nor care if a link opens in the same window or a different one. It’s strictly a usability issue, not a search engine one.
Best,

I’m on the complete opposite side of the fence. I get irritated if I click a link and it opens a new window instead of taking me somewhere else in the same window. I don’t care if the link goes to another page on the same site or off site. A link that opens a new window without letting me know that a new window will be opened violates my expectations. If the link is labelled in some way that explains that it will behave in a non-standard manner, then I can accept the non-standard behavior and not be irritated. Set the expectation and I have no reason to complain.
