I found some websites that offer the ability to purchase inbound links.

This of course should boost the Google PR of any site that buys these right?

Or is this an SEO no-no that you can be blocked by G for?

Of course purchasing ads (in the form of text links or any other type of link) from sites is a legitmate practice.

I wouldn't purchase them for PageRank, however, as they'll only be good for as long as you are paying for them. But buying ad links can be a great source of traffic.

I find small sites related to my category and get text links there. Its worked great for me for both rankings and traffic. I am in online education ...so I generally do this sites run by trainers, professors etc that have good content...and are not very commercial in nature. They sometimes even link for free cos I do have some good content now.

Go ahead...its a good idea! Its fair n square marketing!

I would also consider advertising on completely different topics to be fine as well. People have wider interests than the single page they are visiting, you know. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

The pitfall is when vendors are seen to be trading PageRank - Google doesn't like that at all.

But whether you do it via links or graphics, legitimate advertising is legitimate advertising.

I agree. We all see ads that aren't directly related to the page on which they appear, and many of us (including me) automatically think, "that's just for PageRank."

But if you're buying ad space in order to promote a product, then your real concern ought to be whether the readers of the page would be interested in your product, not whether a search engine is going to view the ad as thematically related to the page.

For example, I've seen ads for travel sites on SEO sites. Is that at all relevant? Well, how many people reading this have just gotten back from San Jose?

Obviously, you have to be careful about where you're going to spend your advertising dollars, and a lot of those pages where we all think things are set up just for PR... are set up just for PR (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) I'm just saying that I don't think we should automatically jump to that conclusion.

Indeed - sometimes issues such as "site traffic" are more important than "site topic" for advertising purposes. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
