One of my clients sells high-end audio gear for home-use/audiophiles. His name is "Don Better" and his company is "Don Better Audio". Of course, Don, Better and Audio are all very common words. He's concerned that a search for his company's name in Google and other engines doesn't bring up his homepage, donbetteraudio.com. I'm a little baffled as to how I might improve his standing with such a simple business name, particularly without doing any paid listings. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Drew

Welcome to the forum, Drew! (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif)

You are right about the "genericness" of the name. Now if you search for the exact phrase "Don Better Audio" he shows up fourth. Other than that, he'll either have to rebrand under a less generic name or not worry about it and target specific products instead.

I suggest working on your backlinks and internal linking strategy paying close attention to your anchor text.

Thanks for all the speedy replies! Yeah, it sounds like I was on the right track then... I told him it'd be best to rely more on directories than search engines, and that he wasn't likely to show up based on his business name alone. I appreciate it!

Welcome to the forum, Drew!

To be honest, there is not much information on the web site. There are only a handful of links to other external web sites and almost no incoming links. I think that in order to be relevant to searchers and the search engines you will need more information and content. Make the site a resource of some sort. You would then have a fighting chance.

While you stated that you don't want to do paid listings, I'd at least consider setting up a PPC ad on Google for the term:

[Don Better]

to make sure he appears at the top of the page for his name. That will cost him a whopping nickel a click for the highly targeted traffic.
