I have been optimizing my website and I have been doing a good job and seeing results over the past month or two. I am showing up on page 1 for many of my desired keywords. However I would like to ask some questions to better my understanding of SEO.
1. Is it better to pick say 5 keywords and distribute them across the entire domain and on evey page or is it better to simply optimize each web page for a different word? 2. I have been submitting articles weekly to PR websites, does submitting it to many of them hurt you in any way? Will i still get all those backlinks counted toward my website, what exactly will google do if there is duplicate press releases everywhere? Is it smart to start a news page and put all my articles up on that page? 3.When optimizing for keywords is it better to make variations of the keywords? Example: the keyword is bus rental is it wise to say put rental bus as well? 4. Do video press releases really work? Thank You in advance for answering these questions. |

The Tips for Newbies will answer most of your questions with a lot more depth. As will the threads you see pinned to the top of each section of the forum.
1. You should be optimizing for literally at least 100 keyword phrases as a general rule. The more competitive ones you have to try harder at. The less competitive ones less so. But you need to be shooting for a lot more than just 5 phrases if you want to have a successful site. 2. Article submission is just one way of getting the word out. Forget what the search engines will or will not do if they see duplicate articles out there. The fact of the matter is you need a more robust linking campaign. Search out sites where your target users are already hanging out and try to strike up a mutually beneficial relationship with those webmasters. 3. It's good to target keyword phrases people actually type in while searching. I'm not sure your example is a good example, since I doubt it gets searched much if at all. That's where keyword research comes into the equation. 4. See answer #2. It's not a link building campaign at its core. I can be an add-on to a more robust link building campaign. But only if you have a legitimate need to issue a press release that has nothing to do with links. If you send out a press release just to do it and try to garner a few links, you're wasting your time. |

Every page should have it's own unique set of keyword phrases you optimize it for. Don't think of just one phrase per page, but 3-5 different phrases.
While you may have some overlap between pages, it won't do you much good to optimize your entire site for just a few keyword phrases. |

Doesn't this seem counter to the "Just write good content and the rest will follow" advice I see so often? I'm starting to believe that active SEO is important or alternately that spiders are just really dumb.

QUOTE Doesn't this seem counter to the "Just write good content and the rest will follow" advice I see so often? That's okay advice as it relates to blogs and long tail keywords. But if you want to get found for the phrases that are competitive and have tons of searches, the "just writing good content" mantra prolly won't cut it. |

Thanks, already started by tagging my blog posts with appropriate and "key phrase friendly" tags. Also trying to incorporate the better phrases into my new blog posts. Thanks! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
