Hi I was just wondering if I am the only one that spends a lot of my spare time looking for links? I seem to be fanatical about contacting people, I even rang a company in Turkey that I thought would be good for me but we didnt understand each other on the phone - i think they got confused when i mentioned google, anyway every time I get a positive response I jump for joy and need another hit (IMG:style_emoticons/default/eek.gif)

I have definitely learned that if you are:

1. Polite and dont hassle
2. Chose selectively sites that their visitors and mine would appreciate
3. Are of a good standing in the eyes of google

it will work out well - I have had a suprising response from asking people. Most people ignore but if there is real value - who can say no?

Anyone, thought Id share that.

The real question is, are you doing this because you need the links (competing in a hyperoptimized query) or are you doing just because you've read in half the SEO blogs and forums that all you need are links?

You should not have to be endlessly chasing links. What is the return on investment for all this link building? Are you getting more traffic? More conversions?

Definiltely point taken - well I am getting more leads since I started this link campaign so that is a positive. Do you yourself focus a lot of link building or do you ask every now and again or never?

I spend a lot of time doing the complete opposite of looking for links!

I am responsible for maintaining several thousand organic search listings on behalf of clients. There is no way you can do that without building links.

But given how much link building I am required to do, were I to do it the way nearly every SEO blog and forum tells you to do it, I would be out of a job quickly.

I look for efficiencies and measure return on investment. I also try to stay on the right side of search engine guidelines (although they have been known to change without notice).

For example?

Everyone says that, but it never quite rings true to me.
