Does a URL like this - with spaces in it - present a problem for Google: www.company.com/corporate gift ideas/mugs

Google has the page in its index, yet never shows it in the serps - even if I search using the the exact page title in quotes.

All the other pages come up, but not that one. It's the only one with spaces.

I also noticed the code is a mess....tables nested in tables nested in tables...messy font tags, stuff like that.

Would Google 'reject' the page for that maybe?

URLs with spaces are not a problem for any of the search engines, assuming of course the server will actually return the page. The reason for the question is that technically spaces are illegal URI characters in the Unix/Linux world, though most servers these days will still handle them okay.

if you correctly encode the URL it won't contain any spaces,

%20 = space

this is how I also include them in my XML sitemap...

Also many other places where people may use the URL (in email/forums/etc) will not correctly auto link the URL if it is copied/pasted. The link would stop at the first space - in your example: www.company.com/corporate gift ideas/mugs - leaving you with an broken link pointing to your site from an external source.

unix/linux doesn't like spaces in urls. Windows boxes don't care, but google will put symbols to replace spaces.

I would go with lowercase + dash for spaces

Yeah, that's ugly, and the issue with the %20's turning up in other instances - that's also ugly. As this is a new page and hasn't had much going on with it yet, I think I'll advise them to use dashes, and nip this whole issue in the bud.
