I searched but it doesn't look like it has been mentioned.

So I operate a real estate website and blog. A big part of our marketing is posting ads on craiglist.org Maybe 3-5 a week in the services section and 5-6 in the real estate for sale section. This gave me a steady 20+ links. I know this is a very small number but it kind of ticked me off to see they went no-follow. I still get good traffic from posting ads on their though.

Anyone else notice this?

Very, very smart of them. Surprised it took so long. Hopefully it will help keep out the junk stuff of people just posting for links instead of for what posting is intended for.

good point but, I don't think it is going to clear up much spam on there.

Any other Realtors on here who couple up their internet listing advertisements with do-follow classifieds? Any other good classified sites?


By making your site no-follow does it give you more SEO credibility (give you better "page rank")?

wonder371 don't you get it? Classified sites aren't out there for you to get links.

End of story.

Stop abusing them as if they were there as your personal link building playground. You ruin it for those who actually use them as they should be used.

I'm actually amazed that an organization as big as Craigslist took this long. I would have thought they'd have been one of the first to jump on the nofollow bandwagon. It's a little disappointing that it took them this long, assuming of course it took them this long.

Craiglist pages really dont rank THAT well either, so I dont see it effecting their traffic much.

Sorry- not trying to pile on, but-
I do work for a good sized Real Estate company. They place a lot of Craig's ads. They never put a link in the ad.
And they never place "service" ads in a "for sale" category. The idea is to get phone traffic to the desk from a real offering.

Like any social media, drink responsibly.

I really dislike no-follow, but seeing conversations like this soften me to it somewhat, the short term view of using sites like this to get links, makes the long term strategy of driving targeted traffic to a site so much harder; Just think if everyone used sites like they are meant to be used, we might get rid of ad blindness, people would spend more time on sites like craigs list actually clicking on ads, and people might read unsolicited emails safe in the knowledge that it was probably relevant to them....well a girl can dream!

And what difference does it make for marketing?

I don't think Craigslist uses the nofollow on links... I think this member means they nofollow in the meta robots tag. View source of this job listing http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/web/1058078844.html Links are fine, but the top says:

<meta name="robots" content="NOARCHIVE,NOFOLLOW">

Craig's list made the change to "no follow" links some time last year.

This was another reminder of not depending entirely on SEO for success on the 'Net.
