I'm optimizing our website, and I've been using Rank Tracker, which I've found so far to be a terrific enough tool to ask for use of the company credit card. I've found a lot of useful data using it, and i've been comparing the data from our current meta keywords versus the data from actual search terms that result in traffic to our website.
I have a few questions about plural and singular terms as well as reversed order. If you reverse the term "widget making", it becomes "making widgets", which doesn't make sense, the proper term would be "making widgets" plural. I am a strong advocate of using organic phrasing that is based on a desired topic/keyword. I've read that plural and singular doesn't affect PR for a keyword, however another set of keywords that I have are widget school, and widget schools, and while the number of searches for that term results are the same, the competition are significantly different from one another. With regard to keyword proximity in page content, if I have the sentence, "There are many documentaries about making widgets, but it is best to attend a school.", will I still achieve rank for, "Widget Making", "Making Widgets", "Widget School", and "Widget Schools" Drew |

If you were really dying to get "making widget" onto the page for some reason, you can break it up with punctuation:
Depending on the type of widget you are making, widget design can be all important. |

No, I don't want "Making Widget" as your right, it doesn't make sense. I guess what i'm wondering is exactly how keyword proximity plays into the natural order of a sentence. Given the above sentence - There are many documentaries about making widgets, but it is best to attend a school. I see that I will achieve "Widget Making", and "Widgets School" (which also doesn't make sense). But the terms i'm aiming for are "Widget Making", "Making Widgets", "Widget School", and "Widget Schools" If I switch it to read, "There are many schools to learn about making widgets, but it is best to also watch a documentary." Will I now still achieve the terms "Widget School" and "Widget Schools" |

Word order and proximity are a factor in retrieving and ranking search results. How much of a factor will depend on the search query and the population of documents in the search engine's index.

Assuming that my site was the only site in existence to discuss widget making would my previous post be true? |

If you have the words on the page, your page will "match" regardless of word order.

You had grasped it already I think. Using the natural word order is also how people tend to search.
