Would you call web-based message boards, like the high rankings seo forum, "Social Media"?
or is social media only social bookmarking sites like digg, del.icio.us, stumbleupon...etc and social networking sites like myspace, facebook, orkut...etc? |

No, i do not consider forums as social media.
However, they do offer peer to peer networking, but usually based around a specific subject for offering support and help within a community. facebook, bebo, myspace, uboot etc. are more generic and have no focus. Forums are an extension of the old Bulletin Boards and what was usenet. I frequent this forum and a few others because I am interested in Coding / SEO and want to get help and advice on specific subject / problems from professionals. I'm not interested is some dumbass kid giving me a 'poke' or talking about the latest boy band or toy. The nearest i see this forum getting any where near to social bookmarking , is the 'PUB' forum, but thats it. my (IMG:style_emoticons/default/penny.gif) |

QUOTE Would you call web-based message boards, like the high rankings seo forum, "Social Media"? Yes, I certainly would. They are one of the original forms of social media. With old IRC chatrooms being even an earlier form, of course! |

If they're not social, then they'd have to be hostile media (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Most definitely, forums are the original social networking platform. And tend to not only be more "real" than other networking sites but actually do more to develop your reputation and business than a networking site where the goal is to collect friends and then blast your self-promotional messages to them.

There is no question - Forums become "families of friends" to members who play integral parts in their evolution. Like any other entity, we can dive into the deep end and partake - or hover about the sidelines and watch. It's a primarily invisible "social media," but definitely a real community to active members.
