Ok, so I think I figured out that most of my pages have been sent to supplemental index due to duplicate content (i have an image gallery).

I've corrected the problem now, but it's been 3 weeks and my pages still have not come out of the supplemental. Google has been crawling these pages every 2-3 days and they have updated caches of my pages, but still not listed in the main index.

Does anyone have any ideas how long it takes?

P.S. - my site has been around for 6 years, so the domain is aged and most of my pages in the supplemental index have lots of links coming into them, with PR rank of 4.

What makes you so sure they're in the supplemental index?

Well, I think they're in supplemental index because when I do a search for site: URL, it shows up in google. But then if I do a very detailed long tail search of several words in quotation marks that are found prominently on the page, nothing shows up in google.

Before, I was ranking #1-#3 for major keywords on these pages.

Maybe the page is penalized? Is it keyword stuffed by any chance?

It's possible that Google penalized me because I used Kontera (which is that service which creates links from certain words on your site). since I run a photo gallery and don't have much text anywhere, what I did was just write 2 paragraphs about a topic that didn't completely relate to my site. I wrote the paragraph on car buying and insurance. my site has photos of exotic cars, so they are a little bit related, but not completely.

So I had this paragraph on all my pages. I think that's when google put me in the supplemental index. But I took all that off about a month ago from my entire site and I optimized the pages now so they are SE friendly. I've never done any black hat techniques, paid for links, etc. In fact, I've been using your methods since 2003 and it's been great, except i don't know why my site isn't getting out of supplemental index now.

It's a little frustrating cause this has cost me about 30% of my pageviews, and my site was receiving 15-20 million pageviews per month. My homepage is still ranked #1 for a lot of keywords. It's just the rest of my site isnt

How many times can you use a keyword on the page before it is considered spamming?

There is no set number.

Spamming is kind of link porn. You know it when you see it. Or read it in the case of keyword spamming.

Read it aloud to yourself. Have others who will tell you the truth read it and tell you what they think. People's spam filters are triggered a lot more quickly than the search engine spam filters.

There are not any set number of days to get out of supplemental index. You just need to avoid those things that are not liked by search engines. For more information you should read search engine policies and algorithms etc.

You might review the Google Webmaster Guidelines, you just might find what you are doing (if anything) that they don't like:

If you do a search in Google regarding Kontera problems you will find that they were having some issues this month, so you are not alone in that regard. Many people mentioned impressions being down quite a bit.
