Hello everybody,

Many of you know me, and remember my first thread on that forum 8 months ago. I was just starting the SEO selfstudy and work. And you gave me many advices, and I thank you for it.

After completing 8 months, I would like to evaluate myself, what is expected from any 8 months SEO specialist ?

I've started working with a new website, but till now it is PR 0 ! I did some adwords campaigns & the link building still in progress, and over a moth, I can get only 4 backlinks !

Taking in considerations that I did everything in SEO myself only. I'm writing the content, choosing the keywords, running adwords, etc....

is that normal for SEO ?

or it means I'm not on the right way ?

Hope to get your feedback.

Thank you .

depending on the competitiveness of the industry your site is in, you'll most likely need a lot more than 4 back links... keep working on it!

for me the progressive trend should be visible and lots of positive moves toward the improvements..backed by lots of reports to justify the action and improvement

Is the site set up so you can monitor traffic. If not I'd have an analytic program installed so you can see how many visitors your getting, how many pages they're looking at etc. It's the amount of traffic you generate that is most important and that this traffic is relevent to your client's business.

I'd also suggest getting a lot more links, especially from sites related to the industry the company works in. Four is just a drop in the bucket.

Dear T.N,
After 8 months of seo, you should see your site at least in first two search pages of any search engine at least on one keyword. The page rank depends on number of factors like back links, page design etc.

Just 4 back links in 8 months will not help in any way from a seo point of view. I have been optimizing websites for a few years and after 6 to 8 months of complete seo work, the sites could easily be found on first two pages with selected keywords.

Thx

Hi,

First, Thank you all for replying me.

Second, the 8 months were not all working in SEO, it contained months of self learning, testing, etc...

I've learned all by myself without any external help or any senior advice, that's why I hope to know either I'm going on the right way or not.

Thanks again.

Regards.

If you're following the concepts outlined in the Tips for Newbies you're on the right path.

Don't worry too much about how much time has passed. Every market is different so it's basically impossible to say after X amount of time a site should be ranking. For non-competitive terms, I would expect a site I'd optimized to be ranking after 8 months, assuming the site wasn't still caught in Google's aging delay. However if the site were in a competitive market I wouldn't expect it to be even in the top 30 after 8 months. For those I shoot for decent rankings after 18 months.

Hey Randy do you want to come tell my Boss that please (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink1.gif)

Sounds like a great plan to have me sitting here 'SEOing' (acronym for doing bugger all) for the next 20 years (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/giggle.gif) Well, you are in one of those more competitive markets 1dmf. So I wouldn't expect much difference for a longer time. Increased conversions, Yes. More qualified traffic directly from the search engines, No.

Though saying that Randy, we have received 3 leads this week and two have converted so we have increased traffic ever so slightly and kept our 75% conversion rate.

So I guess all the stuff i've been doing and implementing, is making a difference all be it small, but from little acorns and all that.

75%... that's definitely a good landing page! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/eek.gif)

My case is that I've been building sites for about 6 years professionally to web standards and only this year really started to focus on SEO/SEM, (odd - I know). But I'm finding it's a tall order to gain any link-love in certain industries as well. I'm all for creating useful content but when you are the company's only designer/developer/marketer/seo it does become a tad overwhelming thinking of that certain 'useful content' for someone to link to, (especially if your audience generally doesn't have websites).

I'm sure with enough research and practice the tactful online marketing and SEO aspects will become more natural, (hopefully!)

On a final note it most definitely is a good thing this forum is here, we'd be lost! Thank you High Rankings! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/notworthy.gif)

The truth is, this is not odd at all.
The huge majority of people out there building web sites do not understand the importance of SEO, how it works or how to create a well optimized web site. The focus is generally on the "look" of the site rather than the content.

You have taken a turn in the right direction, understanding the need to learn more about SEO and following through will change the way you create sites. Thinking more about the content and how you can work with it to attract more visitors to your site should begin to feel natural in time.

If your goal is to learn more, you are in the right place!
