If a website uses one of your animated gif or jpeg banners to link to your site is it also necessary for them to add a text link in order for the search engines to see it?

HI Ken-

It depends. If the banner is a direct link to the site, it will count for link pop. If there is a tracking mechanism (there often is) where the link is redirected through a counter, it likely won't be picked up. In that case, you'd want a plain text link as well, although that defeats the intention of counting the clicks!

it depends on the way the link is set up, is it is a straigh <a href= link then yes, take a look at the backlinks of some of the top sites, and many of them are paid for banner ads (well its one way of getting around selling page rank (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ) lol

The search engines have no problem following links wrapped around graphical images.

Isn't the idea similar to search engines being able to find images or video clips where there is no tex per se?

Welcome to the forum, atebark! (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif)

Somewhat but image crawling is different than link crawling. Basically a search engine will crawl any link such as whether it is a link behind a graphic or text.

An image crawler simply crawls images and adds thumbnail shots to their index with a link to the actual image. I think a image crawler can tell what an image is about by either the file name of the image itself or the text surrounding the image, not exactly sure but usually when you do an image search, you will notice alot of images that are named similar to your search.

Most often, if given the option, I'll have another site put both my banner thats linked and a text link below it, any added benefit to this or should I just stick with the cool banner. ( I don't " count clicks " , just want traffic ).

Both is the best of both worlds, if the folks linking to you will agree to do that.

Personally, I'm partial to text links. But that's just my preference. As far as the search engines are concerned, either or will work just fine.
