I am currently working on a site for a friend, its to do with debt management, it will link to his site (which helps people with debt) hopefully it will send him some targeted traffic and make him some money.

There is a irrelevantly named URL for sale with a PR of 8, I previously would have bought this without thinking and used it but now I am more educated I realized that since the URL would be getting rebranded and the content changed the PR might not be so helpful..... but there is still part of me that thinks it might.

Looking at the URL makes me think that the backlinks would be pretty useless as the old site had nothing to do with this type of thing so anyone following the links would land at an irrelivent site, but on the plus side its ranked in google and out of the sanbox.

Could anyone with a spare min post up their thoughts!

Thanks as always

Google claims that they reset all backward links from a site once it has new ownership. In which case it won't do you any good.

It was at least a couple of years ago...will try to dig it up. (Could have been "GoogleGuy" but I'm not positive.) Am I the only one who remembers this? I am pretty sure I didn't dream it!

I just don't remember him saying that. Please try to dig it up when you have a moment...

But I don't see the source where Matt or GoogleGuy said this himself. I know the theory is out there...

Yeah, I don't have time this min. to find it, but I am fairly certain we've seen it directly from the horse's mouth at some point. If anyone else wants to give a go at finding it...

Googleguy talked about it fairly extensively at WMW Barry. Most of those are going to be members-only threads most likely. If memory serves there's an old thread (circa 2003?) where he was talking about the roll out of some algo updates that first mentioned it. That's the first time I can remember where Google resetting the authority of expired domains was discussed. Things may well have changed since then, but since Google is now an Official ICANN Registrar it's probably gotten more strict if anything, since they have more info to work with now.

I also heard him talking about it in person some years ago. I believe it was at a Pubcon event, but it was one of those "in passing" convos and it's been long enough ago that I simply don't remember all of the details. I do sort of remember the analogy used though, where he tied it to a brick and mortar bank closing down and getting replaced by some other business. The connotation being that the new store who took over the bank's lease shouldn't automatically get all of the bank's old customers.

If you have a WMW account (I don't anymore) and search for something like "Expired Domains" and then look back in the 2003-2004 time frame you should be able to track it back to its origin.

<edit to add>

This old thread here at HR may help to find a couple of the WMW threads, assuming you have an account there. PowerofEyes links off to two of those, though both are members only.

No one can provide a link? I am not doubting you, I just want to see it myself. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

No rush to provide that link this minute.

The link randy is referring to is here: http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/10036.htm

And it's a public thread. It was Googleguy, not Matt Cutts, but I think we all know they were the same back then.

you can get that domain into Google; you just won't get credit for any pre-existing links.
