I manage an e-commerce site with roughly 150,000 indexed pages. Each page is unique and relevant, however...

Most of our competition has way fewer indexed pages... Usually in the range of about 50,000... and in almost all cases, they are doing much better. Granted, they've been around longer than we have...

My question is this: Is it possible to have too much content? Should I trim down some of my indexed pages, and focus more on our most popular products? Would this give them more relevance in the eyes of Google?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

Not sure why you think the number of pages should have anything to do with your rankings.

Are you concerned with 'LinkJuice' having to be shared between more pages?

If so, structuring your site (in terms of theway pages link to each other) will establish what pages are important if the structure does indeed reflect this.

My concern is this: I don't want to come across as being too "spammy."

Many of our products are very similar to one another. I can't but wonder if by trimming down my total number of pages, the remaining pages will be considered more relevant.

one somewhat major flaw in your thinking.

Search engines don't rank websites, they rank webpages

Are the pages necessary for your site? If so, it's not a search engine concern. If not, why are they there in the first place?

If all the pages are unique, I don't see why there would be a problem with them being too "spammy". If they're just duplicate pages with different product names thrown in, then maybe I'd consider getting rid of some of the pages.

hey tkambler, and Hello everybody.
I dont see the connection between the number of webpages and pagerank of your site. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whitehat.gif)
Theoritically, Google pagerank is the standard measurement of a website in accordance with its quality. and this decides the position on Google SERPs.

So your problem does not account to the no of pages(150,000-high competition) but with the quality and heirachy of those pages. Just rearrange your pages and that should give a boost to your Google pagerank.
Good luck. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/crossfingers.gif)

Actually it's calculated on a page-by-page basis, not by website, as far as I know.

Huh? Rearrange them how? Not sure I understand your answer to the question posed.

PageRank is based on links and as the pages in any given site most probably link to other pages in that same site ... ...

Only "quality" based on the number of links to that page.
