Hello, everyone.
Here are the most important top 5 factors when comes to ranking in Google. If you are new to SEO, should be helpful to you: 1. Title No surprise here, page title, I just can not stress how important your page title is! Make your title descriptive and to the point. Make sure it contains the exact key terms you are targeting. The position of your title tag could be important to, so make sure in your code, it is RIGHT under <head>. 2. Content Content is king in Google’s eye. Does your page have unique content that is useful to your readers? Think about the love that Wiki got from Google. Well, I am not sure about you, I am jealous. Why can’t Google just love me the way it loved Wiki? So make sure each of your page has at least 200 words description. You don’t need to intentionally stuff keywords in there. If that is what your page is about, keywords will be used very naturally. A little bit of trick can be played here though. You can use proper headings and create prominence (bold and underline your keywords) in your on page description. Keep your content updated regularly and keep it fresh. Google will love it. 3: Quality of backlink When talk about links, I am not opposed of link exchanges as long as the site that links to you is trustworthy and the content is highly related to your site. When acquire links, evaluate the site and ask these important questions: 1: Does the site linking to me has a lot of quality content? 2: Does the site linking to me provides extra “value” to my visitors? 3: Does the site linking to me is authoritative in Google’s eye? Further evaluate based on 3 criteria: a- Look at how many pages are indexed by Google b- Look at how many backlinks are counted by Google c- Look at the PR (some people’s favorite) d- Look at the age of the domain 4. Internal Linking Structure Some people actually ignored this factor. They seem only to know links from other sites are useful since one way link is so hard to obtain and we can do whatever we want with our internal linking structure. (Something that is hard to obtain is always better than something easy we can get). Well, don’t ever overlook the importance of your internal links. In your content, link to your own page with the proper anchor text wherever is appropriate. Say if you have a page ranked well for the term “computer motherboard”, in the content on that page, if you link to your page A using “Asus motherboard”, then the chance of your page A get ranked for “Asus motherboard” will be much greater than if otherwise. 5. Time Get top ranks on Google takes time! (unless you start with a blog and start to target a long tail niche keywords). Don’t ever expect your hard work would pay off any time soon. Patience is the key. Keep writing quality content, acquiring quality links instead of staring at your PR every day. At last pray!! |

Regarding the piece on quality back links, I know there is a negative factor if you get too many backlinks from directories that do not have much relevance or authority, but does this inhibit or harm rankings?

QUOTE I know there is a negative factor if you get too many backlinks from directories that do not have much relevance or authority It's not really a negative factor for SEO purposes, as long as you're not linking back. It's more that you may end up wasting effort because your time could be better spent obtaining better backlinks. Low quality links, no matter where they come from, just don't give much advantage. So you'll want to leverage your precious time getting the best possible links you can. |

I guess if the directory page has a relevant title and relevant META description it could help, but going back to what Randy wrote, the back link cannot be a quality link unless there is some topical relevance on the linking site/page such as relevant text or the site has good link popularity, or if the linking sites subject matter is relevant, or if you get to choose your anchor text. My very small experience of directories is that you don't get many of these attributes, I could be wrong and if anyone knows of any directories that are like this then please tell me! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbup1.gif) That's my ongoing project, My goal is to create a SEO directory that return the best value to webmasters. Eventually, I want my all my pages have unique title, metas and on page description about the topic (maybe linking to articles and select the best article displaying on the page). I am still brainstorming on how to make my directory truly stands out from other web directories. It will take me some time since I am still a student in university studying business. But that is the mission for my directory, hopefully it becomes true in the near future. |

you wrote:

Yes; in other words, you have another directory just like the other thousands out there now that are of very little, if any quality to the internet as a whole. I'm sorry; but they are a dime a dozen. The minute you create something for "webmasters" like a directory, is the minute you are creating something for search engines in order for webmasters to try their best to exploit. That is not a long term business model in your best interests. Nor is it a directory that a quality firm would want to get involved with. Build a good resource for "people" and forget about the link mongers please. |

I have to agree. If you're building a directory for SEOs, you're ignoring the needs of regular users. If you do that, the directory will never grow into a valuable, trusted resource, and because of that, any benefit it might offer to SEOs is going to be short-lived.

Yeah, catering to webmasters is a sure way to a crap directory.
Cater to the user and you will end up with a directory that ends up getting google traffic, which is not an easy thing for a directory of links. Change your titles on every submission and refund the crud and and you might end up with something useful at some point in time. |

Please see our old Important Directories thread. It's not so up to date, but it's a good start.
(We don't want to start another list here, or elsewhere.) |

Not to be rude in anyway, but i don't think there is certainly or particular things that are important to google. I know some websites that have nothing of these factors and are rated higher then others with these particular things.
