I love the search engine, but apparently no one knows it exists because I don't ever recall seeing a hit come from them even though my rankings are fine. Anyone else see AlltheWeb action in their logs?

I've seen it too - quite a few times. It's too bad. I like that search engine and they spider the heck out of sites.

You're right. Too bad no one uses it.

Can I venture a guess? You have at least twice as many crawls from Alltheweb than you do Google?

56 visitors from Alltheweb in Dec 03 mind you that is a very very small percentage of the total visitors from search in Dec of 109,659

Lycos uses their data too. Do you have any traffic from there?

Less than 1% of traffic on all my sites comes froms lycos or alltheweb.

I read in the past that alltheweb was popular in europe, maybe internationally focused sites get more traffic from them.

For the second half of last year on one of my sites, 3.5% of my SE referrals were from ATW and .6% were from Lycos.

One question I always have when people ask what kind of traffic people get from a specific search engine is "What terms do you rank well for in that search engine that you aren't getting traffic for?" (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

A lot of the tricks that work for Google or other engines don't work on AllTheWeb - that engine is more about clustering of documents and identifying topographical categories than most. If you've spent the last couple of years building your PR like mad and getting inbound links from any old site that'll give you one, then AllTheWeb isn't going to work very well for you because they can't put you into a "cluster" that matches up with the term.

I'm not sure I have any #1 rankings in AllTheWeb (for any competitive terms, that is) at the Cre8asite Directory (to pick that as an example) but I have a handful or three first page rankings that deliver a handful (3-5) visits a day. That may not seem to be a lot in the grand scheme of things, but that's 1000 people a year who likely wouldn't have found me otherwise. And remember, I haven't done any SEO on that site other than to make it crawler friendly. I'd surely get a lot more traffic if we did some SEO on it and even announced its very existence other than to have it in a few of my taglines around the web.

AllTheWeb isn't going to make you rich with referals, but I don't know that I'd brush it off, either.

Good point about ATW, Grumpus - but could you be a bit more specific about what you mean by the above, please - a couple of examples, perhaps. Thanks.

It's been a while since I read up on this. I'm still not finding much current news on ATW's clustering technology, but here it is in their own words from 2001.

http://www.alltheweb.com/info/news/2001#fasttopicsqa

Someone, in another thread, had asked if ATW was mirroring the DMOZ and I had suggested that I thought they were using it as the clustering seed. So, I guess that means it's still accurate the the DMOZ is at least the "seed" for the clustering, though I'd imagine that there are new things involved, as well. A lot of spiffy new things have apepared in ATW over the past year or so.
