Lets say my website is about selling personalized widgets.

I don't want to go into great detail (on the site) about the actual process I use to make the widgets, because I don't want to create competitors.

So other than showing off my widgets and writing great praises about them (or displaying other's praises which I have done)- what can I do to cause others to link to me? I don't want to solicit links from sites that are very close in content for fear of them copying my ideas.

Any general strategies for this situation? I am sure many people have to deal with this question.

Thanks in advance!

Hi InfoSponge-

Without knowing what you do, it's pretty hard to give you specific strategies. I would recommend working with a professional copywriter and a link builder.

Read through the link building topic for tons of useful ideas.

Scottie,

If it helps, I make a type of personalized wedding favor. Thanks again.

What sorts of things do people also need when they buy your widgets? The sites that sell those things are your potential partners.

InfoSponge,

You got to work on 3 things.

1) Pricing of your widget - Is it priced at an affordable level? I recently posted an article on this issue of pricing software at my blog - <link removed, please read Forum Rules.>

2) Website copy - Very important as people won't be interested in something if they cannot understand what it does and how it benefits them.

3) Marketing - Find other products that are complementary to yours, and work on cross-selling. You can bundle them together too.

Content is most important. Don't try too hard to 'find links' at the expense of marketing and creating great software.

I hope this helps! Good luck.

Alex

As said above, target sites that either sell or offer information that is complimentary. The wedding market is a huge one, so think about other things that are needed during the wedding. There's the generic wedding gifts, wedding and bridesmaid dresses, wedding planners (one you may actually get some affiliate type business from), limo services, cake bakers, flower shops, etc, etc.

It'll also be helpful if you have a pretty good idea of who your potential customers are. For intstance, if your personalized items are going to appeal more to those willing to spring the extra dollars for Big Name Designer dresses, try to get your message out to them by working out a deal with sites that specialize in Designer Wedding and Bridesmaid dresses.

Think Business first, as in those who might actually send you real buyers, and think outside the box a little bit. There are lots of wedding info resources out there, so you should be able to come up with a pretty substantial linking campaign fairly easily.

You could write lots of articles giving wedding advice, tips, suggestions, etc. You could create a directory of other wedding related sites. The possibilities are almost endless.
