I am trying to find out more information about becoming an SEO. I am currently working in Ad Traffick and would like to learn more. I have seen a program from the SEO college and was wondering if this is something I should look into or find other means of furthering my career. If anyone has any friendly advice, please let me know.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, ctrlfreak! (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/banana.gif)

I don't know anything about the SEO college so I can't answer to that question. But since you're a new member, I did want to let you know about the HighRankings seminar in Minneapolis. You can read about it at www.highrankings.com/spring-mn-07-seo-seminar.htm. Since you're a member of the forum you get an additional 25% off if you register by Feb. 15, so total cost is around $900. I've heard it's really worth the money. I'm going to it this year.

This is the site I was referring to: searchenginecollege.com
I was just wondering if it was legitimate and/or worth trying out.

Yes, SEOCollege is a legitimate site.

As to whether it's going to be worthwhile for you, that's something nobody here can answer. It all depends on your learning style, your current level of knowledge, your personal dedication to follow through with what you've learned, etc.

For instance, some people feel they need a more structured "classroom-like" setting to maintain their motivation. Others like formal study, but prefer to work at their own pace. Many people here have found that simply studying the Tips for New SEOs, Frequently Asked Questions and the pinned threads at the top of each of the forums gives them most of the "book learning" they need. Then they simply jump in and "learn by doing," asking questions in the forums as they go.

My personal opinion is that there's only so much any class can teach you, and it's only when you actually start putting the techniques into practice that you really learn what works and what doesn't. That said, if you feel more comfortable with an instructor-led classroom setting (at least when you're first getting started), that's fine, too.

My (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/penny.gif) YMMV

Well, considering 2 of the 5 tutors they mention are Mods here at HR and the other three are pretty well known and respected...

Yeah, I'd say they're legit. If a structured course is your cup of tea as Torka pointed out above of course. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Learning SEO is not an easy task but it is not that difficult too. You can learn more and more by practicing. It requires more and more practice. Even you can go for an SEO e-book SEO MADE EASY. It is quite good book for beginners. Go for it. You will learn the basics of SEO from this very easily.

I have been reading a lot of reviews about "SEO Book," but I do not know if it is worthwhile. Does anyone know anything about it? It's by Aaron Wall. Thanks again everyone for all your advice!

In my opinion, Aaron's book is worth the price.

Mr. Thies kit from Sitepoint is also highly recommended. I found that his kit, combined with the Dallas HR Seminar and following the threads here on the forum on a regular basis has provided me with a pretty good grasp of the fundamentals.

I would agree with both of the above recommendations. But can't choose between them. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/lol.gif)

I haven't read Aaron's book, but I will say that his blog brings up ideas that I tend not to see anywhere else. But it's not about the basics of SEO. It deals more with concepts that are relevant to online marketing strategies and the development of trust and authority.

Hi there

I'm the Director of Studies for Search Engine College. Just wanted to say that if you have any questions about our courses, please feel free to post them here or PM me and I'll be happy to answer them. If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to optimizing web sites and making them more search engine compatible from scratch, based on the search engine's own webmaster guidelines, you would definitely benefit from our courses. If you have alread optimized sites and are looking for advanced training in more technical aspects of SEO, then our advanced course might suit or you might prefer an in-person training session with another provider such as Bruce Clay.

I would agree with Torka that regardless of whether you take a course, buy an ebook or attend a seminar, your true knowledge of SEO won't be tested until you implement the information yourself and optimize some web sites. Then you can hone and refine your skills. Knowledge alone won't make you a successful SEO, you must put that knowledge into practice first.

{added} Not sure if I'm allowed to post a link so I won't, but if you want to see the SEO course/s content broken down into more detail so you can decide whether it's right for you, we recently added this depth of info. Simply click on the SEO101 or SEO201 course links from the main site nav and look for the "More Lesson Detail" link on either page.{/added}
