Yes, "search engine optimization" just screams ÜberDork! Most of us do much more than that. Perhaps "web marketing" is a better term.

Let's go with blame for now.

That would be rankwrite.com

No, my really old site...don't laugh...would have been webwhiz.net...

But I definitely did NOT coin the phrase search engine optimization. I doubt I even knew what the word optimization meant back 10 years ago!

Jonathan,
Carsten never did confirm and released the article on Search Engine Journal and referenced your input (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/clapping.gif) Still a good article and well worth reading. I bet Carsten learned a lot about the early days. Good job everyone searching around for that info. I don't know if we'll ever find anything definitive.

(IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/offtopic.gif) Just in case anyone is searching in 2017, I am now coining the phrase "Chipotle bewitched" in reference to Scottie like behavior. In the future when people say "Chipotle engaged" or "Chipotle obsessed" and look for who first came up with "Chipotle bewitched", it is I!

Jonathan, Adam Audette from LED just posted something which indicates that his dad, John Audette (of I-Sales, I-Search fame) and Danny Sullivan coined the term search engine optimization in 1997.

QUOTE(Adam Audette)
I remember when my family's company, Multimedia Marketing Group,
flew Danny from the UK to our little redneck town in Oregon to teach
the company search optimization. My dad still swears that they
invented the term "search engine optimization" that day! I think
that was in 1997 or thereabouts.

That actually rings true to me and seems very familiar. Wouldn't surprise me at all. Might want to add that to the Wikipedia article.

As long as it's published somewhere reputable, I can add it.

If we are claiming phrases, I came up with "dead end sites" to describe sites that don't link out at all (not that it caught on much) and "aging delay" although most people still say "I'm in the sandbox" (translated: My site doesn't rank like I want it to.)

(David-Chipotle is really a hard word to say! Good luck on that. Chipotle is my favorite example of terrible usability... it always gets a good laugh from the audience when we try to figure out how to navigate it.)

Yes you did!

I coined "link worthy." (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Ron, here's the Archive.org SEF home page for late 1998; I'd been there about a year but I don't recall when the term started being used. Guess we can stick with the current history. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Interestingly, it also shows Jim's "Where Is The Spam Line?" forum. I remember staring at that title for quite a while one night early on, which is when I formulated my approach to optimization.

I just got the heads up about this - I really need to come here more often.

If you're interested Jonathan I can probably get my dad to cough up some specifics.

Thanks Jill! (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/flowers.gif)

Carsten (aka "Roy"), who I respect greatly, didn't like the info because it conflicted with another source. I need to wait for something conclusive to be published, preferably by something with editorial control that isn't run by the people making the statements.

Well, here you go: I didn't coin the term.

That's one. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Jonathan, have you asked Danny at all? I bet he'd remember the conversations with John Audette. Even if he's the source, I don't see how you can get away with any reference for this that doesn't include the source. Especially if it was just John and Danny together when it was coined.

Adam, if your dad has any early references from somewhere, that would be great!
