I'm not a del.icio.us or Digg user, but I'm starting to see links and icons to these websites at the end of articles by mainstream publishers.

Do these have some type of marketing value?

Does anybody have any experience with this? Would you recommend pursuing it or not?

Thanks

I've been testing, but have not seen any sign that tags are a silver bullet. If something is really great, people will tag it whether or not you provide tag icons.

Think we have some other posts on social networking sites you might want to check out when you have a chance, Jeremy.

They can be very good for marketing and real traffic, but they don't (currently) help with search engines.

Actually, let me be clear about this: putting those icons on your page won't help you one bit for search. But they make it easy for someone to suggest your site as a good resource to those sites, which in turn can send traffic your way.

Imagine if you had a button on your site that said "tell Google this is a good site" and visitors could click on it. This is like that, but unlike the toolbar function, it actually works, but only with social networking sites, not search engines.

If you are saying something people are likely to comment on or tag as useful, then it's worth doing. But putting them on the homepage of your commercial site is unlikely to accomplish anything.

Hopefully that's clearer.

I'm finding Technorati tags are doing very well for traffic and are getting picked up by Google as well -- especially (duh) on Blogger.

So here's a question off that. Google pays attention to Blogger at some level. Any idea whether hosting Blogger instead of one of the other better packages still gives you that boost?

I just get the feeling that if I flip a switch from xxxxx.blogspot to mydomain that they're not as interested. And for what it's worth, my graphics person did an awesome template that mirrors our look and feel (except for that cotton pickin' search bar at top) to a T. To most visitors, clicking on one of our blogs is a transparent process. They have no idea they've left our servers and gone to blogspot.com or when they come back. I watch them do it in my software all day long.

IMHO - it doesn't matter on which platform the blog is on. It's about how you promote, how your write, and how you tag your content. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'm using typepad with a domain alais over to a "www" domain name. Typepad's nice because it integrates with Technorati, I believe that blogger does as well, not sure about Wordpress.

I also notice that Google is usually the first "blog search" to pick up my posts, Ask coming in a close second.

I've made use of social bookmarking sites for a couple of websites with good success. A lot of the bookmarking sites throw out seo friendly urls for each of the tags you have added to the link.

A tag is a (relevant) keyword or term associated with or assigned to a piece of information (like picture, article, or video clip), thus describing the item and enabling keyword-based classification of information it is applied to. (from Wikipedia)

It's just assigning keywords to the information. You "tag" the information with keywords. For example a blog post about this thread would tag it with words like
- del.icio.us, Digg, Technorati, Blogger, social media, tags, and the like so others looking for this information can find it easier.

Sorry for the dunce like query!! (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/embarrassed.gif)
