My web design agency wants to implement 303 redirects (rather than 301s) to preserve SE rankings during a site rebuild.

Are they crazy or is this a valid thing to do?

I would recommend using 301 since the 303 is ment for other purposes and according to my own experience and what I read on these forums a 301 is pretty much guaranteed to work.

See HTTP/1.1 303 Status code definiation. One possible purpose of a 303 is to redirect a visitor to a thank you page after filling in a page.

I've (mis)used 303 myself to track outbound traffic because my web traffic analysis program ignored 301 and 302 requests.

Is there a specific reason they want to use a 303 instead of a 301? If not I would recommend using a 301.

I don't know why they want to use it - but I'm not confident they know what they're doing...

It could just be a typo on their migration spec. Hope so!

probably just a typo.

303 status code is HTTP/1.1 and as most crawlers are still using HTTP/1.0 it's highly likely that a 303 would not be recognised.

Thanks Chris. That's exactly what I needed - a reason to make them do 301s.
