As of today the Canadian Government owns .gov.ca

This domain will be used mostly for official communications with non-Canadians (who tend to get confused by .gc.ca) and allow for many more government initiatives with an easy to remember domain name.

More info: http://mcanerin.blogspot.com/2006/02/new-c...main-govca.html

Interestingly, a certain Canadian SEO with a lot of Government clients was responsible for first suggesting this while on a recent trip to Ottawa

The .gc.ca is still the official one, as well - this is just added to it.

But Randy, I thought you liked Ian! Why would you wish something like that on him? (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/sosad.gif)

What about the provincial governments? I seem to recall that Quebec's official pages, even the ones in English, are at gouv.qc.ca -- that's gouv, not gov. So you get URLs like http://www.gouv.qc.ca/wps/portal/pgs/citoyens?lang=en

Anything you can do about that, Ian? It just doesn't seem right that English pages should reside at such a French-esque domain (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/naughty.gif)

Oh Qwerty! Don't get me started on Quebec government websites! They are just awful! Rarely do you find complete information in English! Or you'll find a link to an English page that is written in French!

Do not expect gouv to replaced by gov anytime soon :-)

Congrats Ian! I didn't hear about this until I just read this post! One thing that I don't care for are the marketing URLs that .gc.ca has been using. It would be nice if .gc.ca were retained for official department names - even there I can't keep track of things LOL

Hey Ian!

Do you have any links to official Canadian government sites acknowledging this? I couldn't find anything and was surprised that canada.gov.ca doesn't work...

Nice find, Ian. Any chance they'll be auctioning off those TLDs to folks who want to create domains with words ending in govca... like, let's see

whacha.want.fa.dinnah.gov.ca

OK, so I'm stretching in my application of the del.icio.us principle.

(IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/hysterical.gif) Rand! Too funny on the url!

Ian won't be answering for a bit most likely. He's on his China junket atm so I'm sure connectivity is going to be an issue even if free time isn't.
