You'll notice that on some high-profile sites, SERPs will return pages like:

Company Name - Article Topic
Company Name - Another Article Topic
Company Name - Yet Another Article Topic

My question: Is having the text "Company Name - " in every HTML document title a bad thing? This is what I currently do, because I'm trying to brand my name. But I don't want to at the expense of search results.

No, not at all. If branding is important to your site then by all means live your co. name in the title. Are you getting your targeted keywords in the title as well though?

It is perfectly fine to include company name in all your title tags. Myself - I like to place them after the title of the page like this:

Title of Page | Acme, Inc.

Yup, I do have all the keywords in the title. I was concerned that the branding of the name would somehow detract relevance from the (more important) keywords.

Thanks!

Some people do think having non-relevant extra words in your titles can lower you rankings but in my experience this assumption is minimal at best (I have hundreds of first page rankings withthe company name in the title.)

I also agree with Dave, I prefer to put the keyword relevant stuff first and then the company name.

I would like to add to this question. Is it true to make each title specific to the page? I have about 20 pages and am about to emabark on making each title on each page different.

Right! Okay to keep same company name in title but each title tag should be different and unique to page. That is one reason why I like having company name listed after title of page... something like this:

Unique Title 1 | Acme, Inc.
Unique Title 2 | Acme, Inc.
etc.

BTW - I like your user name "NeilPeartRocks" which is certainly true! (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

The following are not MY words, I just received them from Expert Dan Thies in his SEO Research Labs newsletter in July.

"For years, SEO consultants have debated whether keywords or branding should take priority in page TITLE tags. Given the following two choices, which is better?

Site Name | search term, search term, search term
search term, search term, search term | Site Name

Of course, there are many variations on the two themes, and testing is required to get the best ranking value from your title tags. The second variation is known to rank a little better in general, but some folks insist that the branding value of the site name makes it more important.

After studying log file data from many websites, we've concluded that "keywords first" is the way to go. Not only does this format consistently rank better, but within the data we analyzed, "keyword first" listings had an 18% higher click through rate for the same position. "

I personally have not done this yet, but mostly because I forget about it until I read this post.

Sorry, I just had to fix the spelling on Dan's name --qwerty

Keyword Prominence

Prominence is a measure of keyword importance that indicates how close a keyword is to the beginning of the analyzed page area (e.g. page title).

I agree with jimm that "keywords first" is the way to go. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/angel_not.gif)

Interesting... I just noticed that Google themselves do the company-name-then-keywords title order. Google site:answers.google.com for examples.

If it really made any difference, I would think Google would optimize for their own engine.
