Don't if anyone has seen this yet, but this article examines Google's filing of a United States Patent Application on March 31, 2005.

Interesting. Does the patent application state that they are currently using all of this technology, or simply that they've developed it?

umm...
1. Technically the application doesn't mention Google at all. Though I recognize a lot of names in the application. 2. Technically the original document was filed at the December 31, 2003, not a couple of months ago, according to the patent application. Does anybody really think that Google isn't looking at Historical Data? If they weren't, why would they pay the fees to become a Registrar when they've stated that they're not going to offer domain registration services? Here's a link to the original document in case anybody wants to read it. |

Anyone seen Google's new patent application: 20050071741
It talks about using historical data to determine a page's ranking (like user paths, and the such). I find it disturbing, makes me feel like my job is less secure. This post has been edited by steve_l: Jun 16 2005, 11:15 AM |

2old2play and steve, I've merged your posts to this existing thread.
If I have time, I'm thinking of going through that article in next week's newsletter. So stay tuned! Jill |

If this article is true, it vindicates our methods of "organic" SEO. The third page wraps up with a lot of things that HighRankings.com has been saying for years.
Can anyone shed some light on the author? Is buzzle.com a reputable, long-standing site? Who are these guys? |

Google isn't the only company filing patents which could affect the way in which the web works.
IBM filed 2,886 patents in 2000, I think that in total it was way over 22,000 patents. IBM earned 3415 US patents in 2003, ... anyway, you get the picture. Nobody ever seems concerned about the other companies. What they are doing could well shake some things up too. |

Well the thing about a patent is you make it public so people can't legally copy your invention. With a search engine, you're not worried so much about people copying your invention as you are about people gaming your system.
