This report on the opening day of the 'EyeforTravel Summit' being held in the UK made me sit up!

"Opening the debate on search engines as the new distribution channel for travel, Google head of vertical markets group, Ian Carrington told the audience that Easyjet spends £18,000 per day on Google.

Further compelling evidence came from Tim Frankcom, head of travel Europe at Yahoo. His company launched the latest version of Yahoo Travel this week, and lists companies such as British Airways, Lastminute.com, and Thomas Cook among its customers, although did not disclose their spend. "

Source: Travelmole.com, 9 June 05.

easyJet is one of the two leading UK low-cost carriers. According to my Yahoo money calc that's around 32,800 USD (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/eek.gif)

What's your budget?!

I'm curious as to how many customers a day easyjet flies and what is there annual sales.
$32000 per day is a lot of clickin'.

So if my pencil is working correctly easyjet is spending ~ $0.38 US per customer in ppc.
That' s about what we spend.
Pity we're not doing 1,239,000,000 per year in turnover though.

So their ppc campaign is less than 1% of annual of sales. And is probably less than ten percent of their overall ad budget (pure speculation) At any rate it is possible for them to spend a lot more on ppc.

Note to self: Buy more google stock.

Thanks for that link nedguy.

Thinks: 'hmm, yes. He's right!'

Note to self: buy more google stock before Jodo forces the price up!

I'm surprised they need to spend so much, there can't be very many people in the UK and Europe that haven't heard of them. You would think most people would just type in easyjet.com?

Remember that is in Sterling - over $2billion is US$ terms (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It's interesting to see that the low cost European airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair are making oodles of revenue (and vast profits) while bigger carriers are not doing so well.

As you can get a flight on either of them from time to time for a $1 plus taxes - I'm not sure how they do it!

It is obviously the sandwiches that they sell onboard for £5.00 that is bringing in the money (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

It's a shame the cost to the environment of all these new flights isn't taken into consideration.

jodo - when you explain the figures like you have, the amount they spend online makes a lot of sense.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the number of people who do just type in a site's URL, but who do it in a search engine instead of the browser bar. In my experience, no keyword gets as many searches, or converts as well, as brand name URL's. If easyjet didn't bid on their own, someone else would and take many of those clicks.

... and both 'easyjet' and 'ryanair' were in the top 5 search terms in last month's Google Zeitgeist. I'd love to know what proportion of Easyjet's Adwords spend is on their own brand name!

I imagine that if anyone had easyjet as a keyword then they would soon get a C&D letter from Easyjet as that is a trademark - if you type easyjet into Google no adwords are displayed - with their website coming up first in the organic list - in fact nothing I type in displays an Easyjet Adword.
