This is my first time posting on the forum, and perhaps this has been dealt with elsewhere.
A client asked me to his office two days ago to show me something he found unusual. I had optimised his site for 5 main key phrases, and he was doing his weekly review as advised. He ranked very well for all terms, 3 1st positions in MSN, plus a 3rd and 4th position. However, on Google something odd was happening: one computer showed his site on page 1 for all five terms, whereas the computer next to it showed his site anywhere from page three to five. Both searches were conducted simultaneously, and both computers share the same IP. I returned home and conducted the same test on the three computers in my office, all sharing the same IP, and found no discrepancy. The SERPs were identical, and matched the best results from one of his computers. What was happening? There was but one minor difference between the two machines in his office: The one showing the bad results just happens to be the machine he uses to manage his PPC and AdSense campaigns. Any ideas? btw My advice was that he should always use the other machine to check how he's doing in Google, since it showed the better results. |

This is more common than people realise unfortunately. It is all about Google datacenter load balancing (when you query Google you are not always checking the same datacentre). Odd though that it should be the one with the adwords cookie that shows the bad results... ooh big conspiracy again lol.

I'd heard that it might have something to do with different data centres, but for the life of me can't work out why that would be so when both PCs are running off the same IP, and the queries were made at exactly the same time. Especially as the results matched my own tests back here in the office. And of course my suspicious mind was twitching because the less good results come on the computer with Google cookies, but the client says he deleted all cookies since then and the same thing continues to happen. But it's not much of a problem if every other searcher retrieves the same good results as I have gotten. |

I've been trying for months to improve the site and links etc to get a better ranking, but now I don't know whether to try and do something different to improve the ranking or wait until the datacentres are aligned? (Will they ever align and give the same result?) I suppose I'd like to know: Is my new home result a promise of a better ranking or do I give up once and for all caring about google? <g> (MSN seems to be consistently showing a good ranking.) Google is in the middle of an update *right now* - the official word (well, semi-official - from a google employee who posts on webmasterworld) is to wait a few days until it is finalised to check your rankings - its all in flux right now.

Your IP does not matter. It is the IP of the datacenter entry, that matters.
Think of load balancing this way: 1) You go to www.google.com and is handed the IP of datacenter 1 2) Five minutes later google chance the address of www.google.com to datacenter 2 3) You request google on PC number 2 and get the ip of datacenter 2 4) You request google again on pc number 1. You get the datacenter 1 again because that is the IP this browser knows. You refresh pc 2 and still get datacenter 2 5) A new five minutes period and Google.com change to datacenter 3 6) Test person OWG start up two computers within a short period. Both get the datacenter 3 ip. Something like that will explain what you see. Clintorius |
