I started a new thread because I was not the only one with the same question and it did not relate to the original message here

Jill said about having a yahoo directory listing

I find a Yahoo listing more of a hindrence than a help these days, as well.

Jill - why is it a hindrance??

Outside of the expense of $300/year, could someone please explain why having a yahoo directory listing would be a hindrance?

OK, I found one reason.

Your business name must be your title.

So if your business name is not keyword rich you have an issue since yahoo will use the directory listing over your title tag.

I will concede this is a major hindrance for many.

Any others?

The site description displayed in the search results (in most cases) comes from your Yahoo Directory description -- which is briefer, and less compelling to searchers -- instead of from your site.

Even if this was Yahoo! specific, I'd argue the case, if it was in a general sense, I'm stunned!!

The cost.
The Title sucks.
The directory is buried on Yahoo so don't count on traffic from the listing.
The directory is buried on Yahoo so it doesn't pass much link pop either.

There are just so many links that are just as good (bad?) as Yahoo that I can't imagine how $300 a year can be justified.

Thank you. That is good enough for me to pass on this directory listing.

I don't pay for a directory listing either because IMO there are many better uses for $300 a year, but just to play devil's advocate...

There is a directory tab in Yahoo that returns only directory (no web) results. Do you think that helps any wrt traffic or link popularity?

OK, name just eight. ;-)

(Figure plucked out of nowhere, having recently read of a link from a non-relevent PR 8 page with over 30 outbounds costing around the same as a Y! directory listing.)

Hi glengara and Welcome to the forum (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif)

We have a nice listing of directories here

I went thru them pretty quick.

I did this. Is it free? If yes, I looked at it and if it was nice looking I found the appropriate category and submitted a add URL request.

I kept a word page open and anything I had to fill out I did it there first. So when the next directory needed the same information I could copy and paste.

I got to a point where I could compete a listing in less then 5 minutes. I bet others here could cut that time in half.

Thanks for that Presentationrentals, but from the start Google specifically mentioned two directories where a listing would help a site appear in the G SERPs.

As far as I can see, and despite the plethora of new "directories", nothing much has changed.

What two? dmoz and google?

Most reading I have done lead me to believe dmoz no longer gets a larger bump from Google

The bump comes from dmoz data being uploaded into other directories.

* dmoz and yahoo?*

Yup, as far as bought links are concerned, nothing comes close :-)

*The bump comes from dmoz data being uploaded into other directories.*

It is similar, though less extensive, in Y!

I thought yahoo was closed proprietary, unlike dmoz who allows downloads of its directory.
