Hi,

I've seen situations where a backlink is added to a site template and hence is generated on any page spurned from the template. Do these add any weight to SEs that use this as a measure of importance? One site is giving me approx 700 links from their pages but whilst it may not harm me - is there any benefit? I'm also thinking about my competitors here.

Thanks in advance

Any link may provide some benefit. It's doubful that 700 links from one site would be counted the same as 700 links from different sites, however.

But I don't know this for a fact, it simply seems like common sense to me, thinking from a search engine's perspective.

To add to what Jill said, there are specific ways such a link can benefit you, compared to having your link just on a "links" page.

1. Your link will show up on some pages that have fewer outbound links than others, and that's a plus.

2. Your link will show up on the home page, which is valued more highly than other pages by some engines, I believe.

3. Youyr link will hopefully show up in conjunction with different variations of your link text keywords. This might help you or not, depending on the link text and the relevancy of the site.

4. And, like Jill, I am certain that 700 links is better than 1, although not as good as 700 from different domains.

*BUT* watch out. This can backfire.

If you have very few other links and you suddenly have 700 links all appearing with the same link text on the same domain, you could get your site "sandboxed" by Google for that very term. There is a really great discussion on sandboxing here.

Good luck.

I recently got about 1000 links from one site, a directory. They got more traffic from my site to them so I made a top referral list that shows up on each page of their site. I found out because I got a big jump in inbound links during the last google update. I’m not sure how much it improved my rank but using many of my key word combinations I’m often now just below the paid in blue sites or at least on page 1. Ditto over at yahoo.

This would lead me to believe that gaining 1000 links from one site has some value over one.

*.. whilst it may not harm me...*

Wouldn't be too sure of that, particularly if you're doing a bit of inter/cross linking.

Seems to me RoS links can bring unwelcome attention to the site's linkage pattern.

bims,

Of course backlinks help in Search Engines placements. How come a single site can give you 700 links?

The links do count to an extent, though as Jill stated, the extent is not the same as unique links. I think if your going to link across a large site, I would look at the cost in more a marketing sense, not a link sense. You will find the SE's will not give you much of anything for 30,000 same site links, though the traffic potential will. You won't get penalised or anything like some think, but you won't fly up any rankings either. I have tested this for myself across a PR8 & PR7 site with 30,000+ pages to measure the affects. The affects where marginal towards my own rankings vs. the quantity of links. It did provide a little, but nothing compared to unique links. I even noticed the traffic was marginal compared to what I expected, as the user tended to skip past the same ad continually showing upon the site.

I know a site in my "industry" with #1 Google rankings for many VERY competitive search terms. This site has it's link embedded in another site's template (with thousands of pages), none of which are related to the site in my industry. I'm puzzled why this person gets #1 rankings when the vast majority of his links are tied to a totally different industry.

Any clue what's up there?

Welcome usave! (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif)

It's cuz a link, is a link, is a link (as Debra, our link building mod always says). It doesn't have to be related, although it's better if it is.

Wouldn't it be great if that changed in the near future?

I suppose that depends if you're the one with the most links or not...

Sad for folks with many off-topic links. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/cry_smile.gif)

Happy days - I'd think - for folks who stuck with targeting related/complementary sites or pages. (IMG:http://www.highrankings.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/kicking.gif)
