I found a recent PR grad who specializes in press releases. We were going over some things and I was amazed on how many AP copy rules there are. It was definitely humbling to see how much I did not know.

Do many of you utilize AP copy for online press release sites? I looked at PRWeb's tips page and didn't see any mention of it. I'm going to try to utilize her regardless. From looking at her work, she can write a much better press release than I can.

Any input from the experts?

Paul

There are lots of Tips for Writing Press Releases out there- it never hurts to use the stricter formatting rules.

I do believe though, that in this day and age, the content matters more than the format. You can write junk releases all day in the best style and get nothing back while if you've got something newsworthy, you can pretty much phone it in and get coverage.

Yeah, I totally agree with Scottie, your content must be newsworthy for the reporter to use. The formatting is just to faciliate them to go thru hundreds of press releases a day.

I use some of the AP rules when writing my releases, but generally never follow them all. I go more by what actual reporters say than what AP dictates.
