Is it possible that your domain name had a previous life and used to be about something else?

The general rule is that you cannot be penalised by the SEs for inbound links (backlinks) because you have no control over who chooses to link to you.
However, if your domain has a past life, then this muddies the water some - but we'll await your info on that before advising further.

As far as I am aware, my domain did not have a previous life. I had a closer look in to the problem I was encountering and I think what might have happened is that a company I used to register my company with has given me some 'free' SEO help by using one of those nasty SEO software programs that link builds automatically. I will need to build more quality links I guess to make sure that the first page of results for my site is all relevant sites. Any other advice you can give?

There's your problem. Never, ever, ever use a company to "register" your site. All they do is submit you to nasty sites as you've seen.
You're going to have a heck of a time getting all those nasty links removed now...

Take a good look, I would look at the sites that are showing up in your backlinks, and run a backlink check on THEM to see if your site appears!
