Changing Hosts Effect On Google
Posted 05 September 2004 - 11:10 PM
I am concerned about any effect any host change might have with Google. I have unfortunately let this slip and will have about 12 days to make the change unless I go on month to month. Now with 2-3 days of time to repoint the domain address, this only gives about 9-10 days to settle.
The question I have is, once the domain has been pointed to the new host, are there any remaining issues? Last time I moved the site it was with my current host moving it from server to server because of the consistent problems that they had (and still have). Within about 3 days, I lost a lot of traffic and it took 2 months to get it back. Does Google index by IP number or anything else that would have caused them to lose track of the site? Any opinions on whether the site should remain live on the old account for an extended period of time in addition to the new host?

Every now and then G doesn't update their dns or something like that, and go knockin' at the old server. If you can keep it up a month on the old one as insurance, that usually is fine. Or simply wait until you see that G has found the new server and then take it down on the old one.
