If DMOZ had more paid employees, they wouldn't be in this boat. The issue is lack of resources more than anything and growing pains from being so popular.

It's amazing to me the amount of organization that it took by mostly volunteers to get DMOZ to where it is now. If it had an owner who took a little more pride in it and invested some resources to get the technical systems up to snuff, it would make a huge difference.

In the meantime, you can submit to a real business. Yahoo is pretty quick to get their submissions reviewed and listed- you do have options.

MaryBetht,

You might find this letter to a friend written by an ODP editor illuminating.

Bernard,

Thanks for the link. The thread certainly does shed some light on the philosophy of DMOZ. I'll keep submitting my sites to DMOZ and hope for the best like I do now. It's just a very frustrating situation for SEO's. I guess I'll just have to be patient.

I found the best way to get a site listed, especially if it is your personal site is to apply to be a DMOZ editor in the category that you want your site listed in! I tried for weeks to get a couple of sites in a category and was only successful when I used the two sites as examples of how I would submit a site to the directory. I don't believe that there is any conflict of interest as long as the sites that the sites being submitted are quality.

Most probably never to be seen again. Good strategy, I just hope you help alleviate the problems, rather than exascerbating them!!! Many ppl join specifically for this purpose, which is fine as long as you stick around and do what you volunteered for. But then why not just join JoeAnt? Same effect, quicker, and less time consumming!!!

I actually looked into becoming an editor a while back for the category I was trying to get listed, but, correct me if I'm wrong, you have to actually know something about the cat you want to be an editor for. Since I had pretty much no knowledge of this cat (boat racing parts/products) I didn't see myself fit to be an editor in this category. My site eventually got listed, but took about six months. I have two sites that I'm still waiting on, and it's probably been about 8 months now. I'm considering resubmitting those.

Congrats Nedguy

Now just wait a year to two years for an editor to wake up and get around to reviewing and you'll be in. :P (I know I'm being sarcastic, couldn't resist)

Hey, I realise i might be getting over-excited about this.

but as our leader and guru, mistress Jill, might say (If she were looking down) "Grasshopper, even the longest journey begins with a first footstep".

That's okay Nedguy, I get excited over stuff all the time. Hopefully, DMOZ lists you pretty quick.

torka, I recently found musicmoz.org. I wonder if you would have more success submitting there if you haven't already. The directory has a PR of 8 and like DMOZ also allows other sites to use their data which could result in other relevant links.

Does anyone know of any other subject specific directories that are using the DMOZ model?

Yes, the ODP also has CHEFMOZ.org - dining guide/restaurant reviews
