How About Purchasing Text Links?
Posted 19 August 2004 - 08:41 PM
This of course should boost the Google PR of any site that buys these right?
Or is this an SEO no-no that you can be blocked by G for?

I wouldn't purchase them for PageRank, however, as they'll only be good for as long as you are paying for them. But buying ad links can be a great source of traffic.

The pitfall is when vendors are seen to be trading PageRank - Google doesn't like that at all.
But whether you do it via links or graphics, legitimate advertising is legitimate advertising.

I agree. We all see ads that aren't directly related to the page on which they appear, and many of us (including me) automatically think, "that's just for PageRank."
But if you're buying ad space in order to promote a product, then your real concern ought to be whether the readers of the page would be interested in your product, not whether a search engine is going to view the ad as thematically related to the page.
For example, I've seen ads for travel sites on SEO sites. Is that at all relevant? Well, how many people reading this have just gotten back from San Jose?
Obviously, you have to be careful about where you're going to spend your advertising dollars, and a lot of those pages where we all think things are set up just for PR... are set up just for PR I'm just saying that I don't think we should automatically jump to that conclusion.
