I am looking for sites to exchange links with and I noticed several sites with a page rank anywhere between 5 and 7 but when I visited the link page it was grayed out. Would it be of any use to request a link from these sites or should I just move on to the next.

Another question I have regarding the pagerank, when searching for Miami Beach Hotels I see several results on the first page with a grayed out toolbar. What could be the reason these sites are showing on the first page?

Are you talking about the sponsored links (btw the first link to expedia does not work, so much for paying the BIIIG bucks)

Do you mean your Browser toolbar, the google toolbar or some link element on the results page?

I see,

This is how I understand it.

The google toolbar PageRank meter shows an estimated PageRank of the webpage that is currently within your browser.

When you have a results page from google and you look at the PageRank meter that is the PageRank of the results page not the websites listed on it.

Hi Rene,

The Google toolbar PR graph isn't always accurate, so just make note of that.

That said, if those grayed out pages are ones you think would benefit your site visitors, then go ahead and link to them. Chances are, your visitors would not be interested in a page full of links though.

Use your own common sense and intelligence to decide if a site is worthy enough to be listed on your site. You can't go wrong if you do that!

Hi Jill,

It is the other way around, I would link from my linkpage to their home(or any other page) and they would do the same. Now my question is when that pr rank is grayed out, is it worth getting a link from that page. My common sense would say no but maybe you have another take on that.

Hi Rene,

Just to extend on what Jill is saying;

Use your own common sense and intelligence to decide if a site is worthy enough to be listed on your site. You can't go wrong if you do that!

If you think that another website would be of use to your visitors, this could be because it contains relevant info, then link to them not because your site may reap the benefits of their PageRank but because your site will come across as a good resource.

Maybe in time you will find alsorts of websites linking to your website for that reason (is a good resource).

Also If a website doesn't have a high PR yet it doesn't mean that It would have a massive PR in the near future.

So if you would like a Yes/No answer, I would say Yes it is worth linking to a site with a 0 PR.

Rene,

Any link to your site is useful. Someone, somewhere might see it and click on it.

It may or may not help your site in terms of search engine rankings, but it won't hurt it either.

Rene-

I have a directory in which many of the individual state pages are showing PR0. And yet, they rank #1 for their search terms.

Regardless of whether the PR0 is incorrect or simply showing up because there aren't a ton of incoming links to the site/page, the sites that have a link on it are getting traffic. And traffic that converts!

Don't worry so much about PR!

You know, this makes me wonder something because I've been noticing this a lot...

Has anyone else noticed that more and more links pages are showing PR0 these days?

That is, pages that are basically just a page of links, partner sites, whatever, even some directory type links pages. Tons and tons of them are PR0.

I do believe Google may be making a statement...makes good sense, actually.

If they're doing that by default, they haven't gotten to me yet. I'm running two sites that have link pages (both of which are actually named links.htm) right now, and they have toolbar PRs of 3 and 4. For what it's worth though, neither one is strictly a reciprocal links page. Both contain links to sites that don't link back, and both sites have non-reciprocal backlinks.

I find that the PR bar is frequently grayed out for sites that I load these days. I think something is flaky with the toolbar. What I find is that if you look up the Backlinks and then hit the back button to go back to the page or otherwise move in and out of the page suddenly the PR ranking will appear.

So don't necessarily believe the toolbar the first time you look at a site.

No, I'm not talking about a toolbar glitch. It was happening too much, on too many of the same kinds of pages.

Seems like I should investigate further. I forget why I was even surfing with my toolbar last week, but I did notice that weird stuff when I was.

Bob, how many links do you have on your links pages? I'm thinking if there is anything to this, it could be that they discount pages that have a certain number of links. The ones I saw weren't hundreds, but they were a lot.

It could also have something to do with reciprocity also. Anyway, something fun to investigate if anyone has nothing better to do!
