I've had a number of people ask about the Advanced Link Building session at the SES conference in San Jose so I went back, found a copy of my slides ( lost the floppy :embarrassed: ) cleaned them up a bit and have posted below.

I didn't include everything but this is the gist of the spiel and the questions asked after.
------------------------------------------

 Should you buy or sell links?

YES! They used to refer to this as buying advertising…

If you find a website that compliments yours, has great traffic (or potential for high traffic) buy a spot on the site. Make it a html link and write the text so it’s compelling, keyword rich and has a call to action.

 How far is too far in optimizing your internal link structure?

When every other sentence is hyperlinked or the site doesn’t have any outbound links at all! Don’t go overboard and hyperlink every one of your keyword phrases. It’s not necessary and makes your site look silly!

 Can natural interlinking be perceived as link spam?

To me, the keyword here is “natural”. Linked sites sharing commonality should be fine provided they have outside links coming at them as well.

This question was asked to address the practice some employ to artificially inflate page rank by creating and interlinking mini-sites. Since most mini-sites don’t have outside, relevant sites pointing at them, they don’t pass any link popularity on. You've created sites for the sole purpose of manipulating page rank. ;) They might give a temporary boost, but you'll probably end up being penalized in the end. Don’t practice voodoo linking. It’s a waste of time.

 Do bad sites linking to you hurt your ranking?

No. You can’t be penalized for the sites that link to you. What a mess that would cause huh?

 Can you be penalized for guest book links pointing at your site?

No. Guest book links don’t hurt you – but – they don’t help much either. Most guestbook links are not relevant to your topic/keywords/website. The time spent finding and getting these links could be redirected to finding one high quality link that would be far more beneficial. Also, see the answer to the “bad sites” question above. Applies here too.

 Do you need a reciprocal links campaign to build link popularity

No. One way links will do nicely! :D Reciprocate if it makes sense for you to do so or is required by a quality site. Concentrate on getting links from sites within your market niche.

 Do DMOZ listings get a special PR boost?

No. DMOZ listings are a great link to have, but convey no special boost.

 Where does Google list sites by page rank result?

In the Google Directory. It’s a great tool when you are researching potential link partner sites.

 How can my stats help with a link campaign?

Your site’s stats program is an excellent way to find keywords, geographic and demographic information as well as basic statistics to help you search for quality link partners. If you don’t know how to read your stats, find someone to teach you. Your stats should be the first thing you read after the morning paper!

 Does the link popularity associated with expired domains convey when you buy them?

Maybe at one time, but not anymore. This question came up in the session Q&A and the Google Representative on our panel basically said Google has become aware of that “practice” and has taken steps to stop it.

Again, this is one of those things where you’ll spend way too much time trying to capture a little bit of something that won’t last and isn’t relevant. Don’t do the voodoo link stuff. It’s better to be Glenda the Good Witch.

 Article submission URL’s

Here’s a handful of sites that will take articles for submission at no charge:

prweb.com - ideamartketers.com - goarticles.com

 Link Promotions

Here’s a handful of promotional ideas or incentives to use to secure links:

….If you add our link, we’ll offer your visitors:

Free shipping
Discount Coupons
A Buy One Get One Free

.......add our link and your visitors will automatically be:

Entered into our contest
Sent a premium item
Signed up for our newsletter

Offer to lease content from your site in return for a link

Send testimonials on products/services you’ve purchased/like and include link in your signature tag.

Be sure to have a " how to link to us" section on your website. Make it easy for people to link to you.

Put your linking instructions in all the email and snail mail you send out. Don't over look snail mail and bricks and mortar opportunities to ask for links. Think Link whenever possible!
-----------------------------------

There were a couple of additional slides, but these are the highlights I felt most important. Hope there is something in here that helps you. And since I never feel complete unless I say this - here goes:

It's not linking, it's marketing! :D

Magnolia,
You don't know how much I appreciate your posting this information. I'm stunned, amazed, awed...you answered so many of those nagging little questions I've had about how to link.
Thank you. I rarely archive articles or posts (I have this thing about saving every bit of my hard-drive space possible) but I certainly saved this one!
Best wishes,
Sheri
