Translating Website To Spanish?
Posted 08 July 2004 - 10:05 PM
I currently have a client who needs their web copy both in english and in spanish. I would assume that translating sites to spanish is a common practice and that there are copywriters out there that do this.
Anyone out there had experience in this area? know some common pitfalls to watch out for?
anyone do this sort of thing for a living or know someone who does? (in that case pm me)

For example: We often optimize sites for something like "boston boutique hotels" -- in Spanish, this phrase does not exist.
It is amazing some of the flubs that bigger companies have made with translation-
Chicken-man Frank Purdue's slogan, "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken," got badly mangled in a Spanish translation. A photo of Purdue with one of his birds appeared on billboards all over Mexico with a caption that translated as "It takes a hard man to make a chicken affectionate."
I'd recommend having a bilingual someone do it freelance. I have someone that we use for this & can ask her if she has time to help you if you like.

I live in Spain and sometimes the word translations are strange and you have to be careful.
Huelvos (eggs) are commonly also Balls and I drive a Mitsubishi Pajero...
"Pajero", in Spanish, is something done with the hand and it rhymes with tank.
