If You Could Spam The Search Engines
Posted 15 July 2004 - 10:15 AM
It takes a great copy writer to articulate the unique selling proposition, value and depth of content in clear, concise, scannable and therefore naturally optimized language. Writing the correct code and illustrating the content to make certain that the people who will most benefit from the content have ready access to it is the icing on the cake.
That is the kind of professional I want to be. I would rather be the tortoise than the hare. Of course, I'm not rich, but I do sleep at night. :halo:

All this considered, isn't it a form of spamming to put a huge effort into artificial backlink programs? If I've got enough money to put a team on it, I can create the illusion that my site is far more "relevant" than another site that actually has better content.
I have a hard time believing that many sites would really attract a lot of unsolicited links from arms-length sites -- so many sites don't have any external links at all...

I don't know if that's exactly what you mean by "artificial," though. That word could be used to describe any link that's gotten by any means other than sitting around waiting for someone to find your page and link to it.

That's pretty much the meaning I had, but I'm thinking of really concerted efforts to get other sites to post a link for you. It's not a bad idea, in terms of building traffic to your site, but I don't really believe they are a reliable indication of what's relevant to the searcher.
Could be I don't trust Google enough to be discriminating or accurate in how it scores the linking sites.

Why just last week I heard a large sum of money had changed hands to sabotage some very popular and well respected forum about SEO, as it was coming up to it's first birthday!!!
