Basically a page's backlinks are all the pages that link to it. Some people prefer to break that list down to internal and external pages (that is, pages on the same domain and pages on different domains).
Then there's the complication caused by the fact that Google chooses not to report all of your backlinks when you do a standard backlink search (link:www.domain.com). But any page that links to your page is one of your page's backlinks.

You can use the tools at www.marketleap.com (link popularity check - on the left) to check for backlinks.

Backlink for a web page X, is just page that links to web page X.
To findout eh backlinks for a page www.X.com use the following in google.:
www.X.xom -site:www.X.com
Backlinks can be external or internal .i.e pages from within the site that link to page X and external websites that link to page X

Backlinks are also sometimes called inbound links.

I'll throw my 2 cents in also:
A backlink (actually it should be called a backwards link in Google language) is simply any link to your site that is not from your own site.
(Although Google also counts those from our own site as a backward link too, so maybe my definition isn't so good!)

Finding back links is a feature of google.
Just type "link:" followed by the URL as the query, Google comes up with the pages with links to the URL.

Welcome, Andy
You're partly right on that point. The link: command will get you some of the links Google knows about. There are plenty that they're well aware of, but choose not to display.
