First Place called me today. Cheery telemarketer. Asked if I heard of them. I said "yes, you used to be called "traffic power"." Got some song and dance about how they had to change their name because they were being slandered in discussion forums.
I got my call today and when I asked them about this, they said they they bought out Traffic Power.
I then said, "So you didn't just change your name to First Place but you actually bought them out?"
"Yes," was the reply.
Then I say, "So TP changed their name to First Place and then your company, also called First Place bought First Place?"
"That is correct," he says.
I then told him we were an SEO but he continued into the sales pitch asking me if I cared about getting additional traffic to the site.
I said, "Maybe you didn't hear me before but I told you we are an SEO so we are actually a competitor." (although I really don't think as of my company as a real competitor because we aren't in their 'spammy' league)
We talked a bit further... they are still directing traffic to client sites through their own domains and obviously from the noise I heard in the background, still telemarketing like crazy.
Too bad companies like this can continue to exist. Hopefully as marketing people buying SEO/SEM get smarter, First Place will eventually fall by the wayside.
Oh and Trafic Power, First Place or whatever you call yourself next - if you are reading, please do us all a favor and take Cline's advice above and "Find another line of work."
