Links can also be a bad thing. I have this idea about community - it goes like this.

If all of your competitors have about 250 back links and you have 25,000 back links this can be seen as link spam.

Further, it is far better to get the links naturally.

I have been in this SEO field now since 2002, I learned the best way to "chase" quality links is to email the webmaster personally. Although I have seen sites for highly competitive keywords, 15.000.000 results in Google, have like 15000 backlinks. These links seem to be build up for 80% of reciprocal links. My question here is... Did this webmaster sent 12000 link requests? It seems that for highly competitive keywords/keyphrases linkpopularity is still very important.

I have noticed a big dropoff in the last 3 months with my google traffic, while my Yahoo traffic keeps going up. I fixed a link problem I found and now I am working at doing SEO again to start to try to get back to some of my top 10 positions where I am now buried deep. It looks like I also need to crank up the links and look at my keywords again.

Google keeps me busy, but I love the challenge of it.
