Ask Jeeves to drop PFI program!
I thought I would let you know that Ask Jeeves (US and UK) has annouced that their Site Submit PFI program will be dropped from 30 September 2004.
The interesting part is that it not will be replaced!
No paid inclusion at all.

This is good and bad. Good because now they will be able to compete on the same level with Google in the fact that they will not let money have any influence at all over editorial listings like Yahoo is suspect to.
However it is bad because they (Teoma) are typically slow to crawl new content and add it to their index. I have used the PFI many a time just for the mere fact that after waiting 3-6 months for them to find updated content and add it to their index didn't work, PFI did.
Therefore, hopefully they will improve their crawl and update rate.

Ask Jeeves is making a lot of news these days. Dropping the PFI is a good thing, IMO.
I've always liked the Teoma results, but they take a long time crunching the results because of the algorithm. I remember reading an article that their index size will never compete with the big guys because of all the processing required by the algo in computing the related sites and additional info.
They are definitely making a play to be counted in with the big dogs - we'll see what happens. Despite all the changes, additions and improvements, they still need more users.

They must have increased something in their server farm because they now have announced the new "binocular" feature which lets you hover over the binocular icon and see a thumbnail of the site you are considering going to. They say it reduces wasted time going to the wrong sites by 50%. Gotta have some heavy duty space for all those thumbs I'd think.
By the way, I heard about this feature this morning on CNN Headline News so they are making waves - we'll see how big they end up being.

This is interesting - I was about to pay for inclusion in Ask Jeeves.

I think July 24th is the deadline that if you subscribe URLs, they will still be included for another year. However, at this point, I myself simply prefer to let Teoma find URLs or updated info on its own. It takes a bit more patience than with Google or Yahoo but Teoma and Ask Jeeves aren't nearly as well used as the others anyhow so I don't mind the wait.
