Hi everyone again. What a great forum this is. So many replies so quick.

A very quick one. If you don't submit to looksmart, will msn ever pick you up if you're already high up on google, aol, yahoo.com etc?

turbocashuk,
The other way to show up in MSN results is through the Inktomi database. However, Inktomi results are shown as secondary results in MSN.

You can pay to get included in Inktomi or wait till Inktomi picks your site by itself. Make sure that you are listed in the major directories, especially Dmoz if you're looking for a free inclusion in Inktomi database.

Hi Farhan
MSN is pretty important arnt they - they got like 30% of the search engine market?
So is the only way to get onto the main listings on msn is to pay looksmart? I am currently on google, yahoo, excite, aol, business.com. I havnt spent a cent on advertising or pay-per-clicks.

Hey turbocashuk-

There is no way to get in to Looksmart without paying, unless your site is non-commercial. If your site is non-commercial, you can submit to Zeal.

Things may be changing soon, though. MSN is looking to power their own search engine and already has a crawler out there...

Hi Scottiecl
Good news about the msn crawler. You say it's already out there? That's great. If they no longer become reliant on looksmart then for now I dont have to worry about listing with them.
My site is for free downloadable accounting software. But we do have a shop on it for the accessories ie manual, support etc. Would looksmart consider this commercial?

You get into MSN at the moment automatically through Inktomi, as Farhan said. No need to pay-per-click through LookSmart.

The MSN crawler (MSNBot) is already out there, but there's been no official word about when or how the results of that crawling will be presented to the public. I doubt MS has actually made a decision yet.

First things first, free accounting software? What's the URL? :aloha:

Second- it sounds commercial to me. But you never know. I think we have several members who are Zeal editors who could give you a better idea.

MSN is expanding their Overture listings. Their contract with Looksmart expires in December. Inktomi is now owned by one of their biggest competitors (Yahoo).

I would not be suprised to see MSN drop Looksmart (ie. not renew their contract), and use expanded Overture listings to fill the revenue gap until such time as they can roll out their proprietary search and PPC engines (and drop Overture & Inktomi). That's my conjecture. :dribble:

Hi Scottie
The URL is www.turbocashuk.com. Full open source accounting software - go download it - it's free.
Now if Inktomi gets you into MSN, and yahoo bought out Inktomi, then if you're in Yahoo already, one should get into Inktomi and thereby into msn.

Doesn't quite work that way!

Being in Yahoo (the directory) won't necessarily get you into Inktomi. Although a Yahoo directory does help search engine spiders to find you, and Inktomi has a good spider. But it's got nothing to do with Yahoo owning them.

Yahoo is using Google currently for their results. So getting into Google does get you into Yahoo, but none of that has anything to do with MSN.

Maybe my info was outdated and/or bad, but I thought Google supplied results for MSN as well Yahoo?

Umm...no, Google has never supplied results for MSN that I've ever heard of.

Not any US version at least.

Uhh, yeah, my info was bad, or at least I was giving bad info . . . :embarrassed:

I remebmer now- Yahoo and AOL (please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Somehow, the site I'm working on made it onto MSN through some form of natural inclusion. Anyone care to speculate? :)
