Other than arms of the US search engines, does anyone know of any specific search engines/directories for these countries that I should focus on and any tips on getting ranked in them

There are a number of Canadian shopping directories such as canadianretail.ca, retailcanada.com, listingsca.com and shopincanada.com but they don't seem to attract a lot of traffic. Where they have helped me (a little) is on MSN, which has listed these directory entries for my sites, but not my site itself!

Stricly speaking of Canada, there have been several atempts at Canadian only search engines, but they died. We're too influenced by the big market south of the boarder.
However, in Europe there are many regional/laguage based search engines that you may want to target. From traffice to my site, it appears that most people are using Google, Excite and Yahoo but the regional version. That being said, my site is in English and those are the search engines I'm targeting.
Give http://www.searcheurope.com/ a try as well as Espotting (I think that's how they spell it) for PPC.

The sites here generally look OK but there's a lot of redundancy (all the "Listings Province" sites are generated by the same central Listings site) and quite a few are mirroring Google and Yahoo results.
No clue about the accuracy since I just ran across this site the other day and haven't had a chance yet to dig into it, but you might get some help from Search Engine Colossus. If nothing else it might give you a list to start out with.
Then you get the more specialized sites that require a bricks&mortar presence in Canada for inclusion in the directory.
The upside is that some of these shopping directories can get you onto the SERPs when the searcher turns on the filter for "Canada pages only."

Most important in the uk are yahoo.co.uk, google.co.uk and msn.co.uk, the two biggest ISP's are AOL (google results) and Freeserve/wanadoo (alltheweb/Yahoo! search results) these two ISp's account for about 40% of the marketplace, and a lot of people tend to search from their search panel rather than go to google or Yahoo. There are laods of crap directories, that count as links, but for delivering traffic, then those are the ones to make sure you are appearing in.
There are however loads of local and specialist directories that will deliver traffic.

The client would prefer the redirect solution as that would be cheaper,, but I am not sure if that is the best solution.
Has anyone had any success with getting sites ranked across different countries?
