Hey everybody! I'm looking for opinions and I know everybody has one!

I see a lot folks in this forum recommend goguides and joeant as being great directories to be associated with for getting your website spidered and found. Outside of being spidered, are there any other reasons that make goguides and joeant so important? Why do people like 'em so much?

Just curious . . . :)

Honestly? I like them because they get spidered. So far, I've never seen either one in my referrer logs. I search directories myself now and then, including both of them, but I doubt most internet users do. They mostly stick with the search engines, as far as I can tell.

I do get a little traffic from them- and it's growing.

I like them and support them because there aren't many free directories out there to support anymore! And these both require an investment of time now, in lieu of money.

Even at that, the one-time fee is reasonable. For many commercial sites who have trouble getting inbound links, directories are the only way to get found.

We are not only spidered by the big search engines, but we also give you referrals. See for example: http://extremetracki...?login=toolstac

Both JoeAnt and GoGuides have reached a certain level of maturity with respect to the number of editors working for them and sites listed.

I like the little ant guy on JoeAnt...

Not too thrilled with GoGuide's new color scheme and logo, however. :D B)

Thanks for the input, everybody!

I was going to submit to them anyway- I was just trying to figure out why they're so popular. Thanks again!

From a users perspective, the smaller directories are more well knit and functional than larger ones. Multiple times when submitting to become a directory editor for DMOZ I pointed out how I could improve the category and some of the spam submissions. Each time the spam remained and I was told to reapply.

In GoGuides my category has no spam in it, as of yesterday!

I never see any direct referals from either directory, but used to always go through the time and trouble to submit to them becase they are spidered and they do give you a link, though usually a low PR one.

Since they have become only PFI or join up as an editor to get in I do not include them in my normal submissions unless the client wants to pay the fees himself.

I know, I know, its real easy to become an editor why not just join? I have gone that route and life is just to short to argue with hairdressers about where SEO related sites should be placed, or with accountants about the relative merits of SEO versue PFI in this category or that.

The bottom line that for me its either the client pays for inclusion or I don't use them.

I like both of them because they were started by former GoGuides of Disney's Go.com/Infoseek portal after Disney killed the GoGuides project. I was a GoGuide editor at that time and was very sad to see it go, especially after all the hard work that was put into it. I like GoGuides.org and JoeAnt because they have a strict policy against spam and once a spam site is submitted, it is noted so it doesn't get submitted again. Although both directories will not bring you a great numbers of referrers, I have to believe they will help build your overall Link Popularity. You can submit to both for free by becoming an editor. With one you do have to show them that you have some skill in submitting and editing for a directory whereas with the other you can sign up instantly. Make sure you do a good job though, staying active and submit quality sites because everything you do is documented. Finally, I like them because you can get listed, something that seems to be almost next to impossible at DMOZ anymore.

While it is all about the spider, it is certainly nice to be able to add a site with a description of your own making, without jumping through hoops.
