And recently, I have found some inexpensive catalog scripts/programs that integrate with Mal's cart, making your site/products database driven (i.e. CartKeeper.com $59-$79 to purchase).
Another nice cart that I have not used yet (but will be in the next week to 10 days), is ProductCart at earlyimpact.com. It is $495 for the regular version (they have a version with a product configurator for more), but it has a very slick backend admin with wizards for creating/adding products & newsletters, WYSIWYG editing of anywhere you would enter text, and very good customer service (based on my pre-sales questions response times). It is done in ASP, and you can edit the code. It also comes with a Dreamweaver extension so you can create pages that interact with the cart that way.
Hope this information is not coming too late to be helpful!

PaySystems.com can handle either intangible (downloadable)
or tangible (shippable) products. For an initial fee of
$49.00, you can accept all major credit cards as well as
online checks. Fees are just 3.95% of sales and $1.00 per
transaction. Alternatively, you may pay 5.5% of sales and
$ .35 per transaction.
For this, you receive shopping cart, integration with
third-party affiliate programs (such as ClixGalore.com ),
fraud screening, multi-currency transactions, toll-free
support, marketing tools, and more.

I've used cubecart
It's easier to customize than OScommerce although the latter has more features.
Cubecart has gateway to 2Checkout, Authorize.net, WorldPay, PayPal, NOCHEX, E-Gold and other secure payment companies
