No, and no.
Does a top or near top position in several Search Engines assure a high traffic and sales?
If you have the number one position for "internal combustion cashews" you can't expect much traffic. You have to rank well for terms that people are actually searching on.
Once you have traffic, there's absolutely no guarantee that that will lead to sales. That's more about usability, structure, marketing, price, etc.

Don't rely only on the search engines. Develop a marketing plan that would include a variety of different programs to bring pre-qualified visitors to your site (i.e. they come because they read/heard about/saw you and are interested in what you have to offer).
Keep a close eye on your marketing programs so you can tell what's going right and wrong. If a program isn't working, figure out the problem and fix it or replace it with a more effective program.
Improve conversions on your site. General possibilities...write better copy, improve site structure, make ordering easier.

However, heres some things I think are important:
1> PPC campaigns
2> Links from relevant sites
3> Ad campaigns on relevant sites (goes with #2 but it's different)
4> Easy and quick to use, memorable site and domain.
5> Good content, whether it be informational or sales copy.
6> Proper metrics and smart ROI calculations on everything.
7> Test everything, commit to nothing beforehand.
8> Normal, brick and mortar style business plans and operations...if you wouldn't do it in the real world, don't do it here either.
9> Maintain your margins and ratios...some companies shoot themselves by outgrowing what's healthy.
10> Be ready for dry spells...it happens. Sometimes business just sucks for a little while despite everything.
Oh yeah, and shameless plug: check out the publications of the individuals on this forum. There's a goldmine of information both free and not-so-free readily available here. Jill and Scottie putting out quality information is what brought most of us here anyway (some of us were bribed too but shhhhhh)
