I have a list of about 25 keyphrases that are on DP, and I check them to see how they are. At least half of them are current client chosen keyphrases that are currently showing N/A so I am just checking if they have yet appeared in the Serps. As soon as they appear, then they get taken off the list, and I watch them from the server stats.
The others are related to either one or two phrases that I am working on link building for, or those that are displayed on sites, with live links to Google Serps showing where the site ranks. It is easier to hit the button and forget about it than click each one individually, so they ALL get checked daily.
I DO however check daily the web stats for a host of client sites to make sure nothing has happened with regard traffic / referrals from SE's etc.
I totally agree with you that individually checking your own rankings is crazy, and I tell people that on here all the time. If I was to check daily all the keyphrases I have control of, then I would have a list of thousands.
If I had just one site, I would ignore position checking totally, and just focus on server stats. Hopefully now I have explained exactly what everything relates to you will understand what I meant.

I should think you guys would have better (more important) things to do than check your PR and rankings every two seconds, no?
Its inspires me, when I started, it was nowhere and in a month only to top 700 , now I have many in top 5, top 3 , I love cheking it now, also the vistors and registrations , everything that inspires me I do it right there in the morning.
